The Automobile Association (AA) predicts that the price of diesel, petrol and paraffin will rise in September 2023.
Based on unaudited data from the Central Energy Fund, the price of 95-octane petrol and
93-octane petrol will rise between R1.45 and R1.41 per litre and the price of diesel by around R2.60 per litre.
The price of paraffin is expected to rise by R2.55 per litre, which will be the biggest increase since December last year.
For motorists in Gauteng who use 95-octane petrol, these increases will result in a price point of around R24.28 per litre for fuel, and it will cost around R1 335 to fill a 55 l tank. Filling the fuel tank of the same car at the coast will cost around R1 311.
These increases in prices will also put pressure on all diesel consumers, but especially large consumers in the agricultural, retail, manufacturing and retail sectors.
Fuel prices in South Africa are driven by two main factors: international oil prices and the exchange rate between the rand and the US dollar, as Brent crude oil is traded in US dollars. A weaker rand means fuel becomes more expensive to buy.
Oil prices have risen in recent weeks as some producers cut production due to weak demand.
“Of course, all households have ways of managing expenses and as fuel remains an integral part of many budgets, it is difficult to avoid the higher prices.
As always, we encourage motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good condition and operating optimally to use the correct amount of fuel,” suggests the AA.
